Bio & Philosophy
In 1993 I started camera operating for the NFL and other sports. While capturing the stories of the best athletes in the world, I came to truly understand the hard work and dedication that goes into excellence. These athlete’s stories and my connection with them led me back to school where I graduated from San Francisco State with a BA in cinema. After graduating I worked with multiple small production companies where I contributed to most departments, both in the field and in post production. This experience gave me a deeper and richer understanding of each crew member’s unique talents and challenges. It also allowed me to hone my skills in the camera and lighting departments, and my knowledge of cinematography grew rapidly while working under many talented mentors.
On set, I most value a hard work ethic coupled with a positive attitude. Along with a practiced eye for the best shots, the most valuable aspect of being a successful cinematographer is collaboration. This business is about people and relationships and the success of both. I continuously communicate with the Director and other departments to ensure that the ultimate vision becomes reality.
I am proficient at using a wide range of the industries best cameras and gear, and continue to hone my craft with the latest the industry has to offer. Through TV shows, music videos, and commercials I have a considerable amount of experience melding 3D animation and computer graphics. Understanding what is possible practically, and where computer animation is needed, is an important aspect of this job.
No matter the budget, I strive to produce powerful and memorable images that tell strong and compelling stories. Just as early in my career the athlete’s stories changed my life and propelled me in a new purpose-filled direction, I strive to communicate and affect people through cinematography.
